Paul Onslow-Carey (Landlord)

Mr Onslow-Carey tried to take over the lease of the pub, which dates back to 1740, last autumn but the deal fell through.

So when he heard that its owners Enterprise Inns was thinking of selling it if it could find no one suitable to take it over, he stepped in.

The pub closed on September 9 for a week for the refurbishment and opened again on September 16.

A party was arranged for the opening, with customers invited along to a buffet and evening of live music with band Eagle Jones McBride.

Mr Onslow-Carey has taken over the pub and is  responsible for the day-to-day running of the inn.

Mr Onslow-Carey, who used to own a security firm, said: "It was disappointing when I couldn't take over the pub last year.

"Then I was contacted by Enterprise Inns who said they were going to sell it if they couldn't find anyone to run it and I snapped it up.

"The pub is one of the oldest in Clevedon and, in its heyday, was a hugely successful pub and I didn't want to see the building sold off.

"It was the ideal opportunity for me to take it over and I want to upgrade it at the same time as retaining its Olde Worlde charm.

"I think the relocation of Clerical Medical had an impact as it was used by many of the staff but I am hoping that with North Somerset Council basing some of its staff at the offices this year, they will become patrons of the Old Inn."

Mr Onslow-Carey said he plans to make the pub family friendly and has reinstated the play area in the large beer garden.

The inside of the pub has been redecorated, and the restaurant area upgraded, a new smoking shelter created and the toilets completely refurbished.

He has also introduced a range of real ales and ciders and has appointed a new chef to head up the kitchen.

There are plans in the longer term to upgrade the six letting bedrooms upstairs and open them up to bed and breakfast guests.
